Congratulations, all! We’ve got it!

Thank you, friends for your support!  The budget as it stands:

fully protects the State Need Grant, and

preserves our State Work Study jobs with continued eligibility for future in state students.

We owe a huge thank you to the Independent Colleges of Washington, the Washington Student Association and of course, our fabulous legislators like Craig Pridemore, Cheryl Pflug, Jim Kastama, Kathy Haigh and others who were so encouraging in their words and their votes.

Financial Aid Advocacy, let’s do it!

Monday was glorious.  :) Thank you to all who participated!

There’s nothing like a good overflow of the capitol steps to make your stance publicly known.  But we can’t forget the importance of personal meetings.  We can give legislators our priorities, make a case for ourselves, have pointed, productive conversations that make direct change!

So calling all private schools!

This Thursday 2/25, we’ll be meeting with legislators all day.  The Independent Colleges of Washington has graciously offered to reimburse each school who participates $150 for their transportation to Olympia.  So come meet with us!

8:30AM meet in the Library cafe with the ICW’s Greg Scheiderer for a quick debriefing.

9:00AM disperse to our meetings with Legislators.

3:00PM Recap in the Library cafe, and return to school

Hope to see you there!  Please  RSVP by contacting me at Cyan.Quinn@gmail.com or 971.322.9763

Bus Trip to Olympia!

We have funding for a bus from ASSP, so we are officially making a trip down on February 15th, President’s Day, for a mass student lobby!  We’ll be joining with busloads of other students from 8 other campuses, gathered by WSA (Washington Student’s Association).

Here’s what the day will look like:

8:00am: Free  Breakfast w/ Coffee
9:30am: Get on the bus down to Olympia
11:00am: The festivities begin!
1:00pm: The festivities end!
2:00pm: Get on the bus back up to Seattle
3:00-4:00: Arrive back at SPU

This will be a fun and significant way to spend your day off, and since you’ll be getting back by 4, you’ll still have the afternoon/evening to hit the city or nestle up at home to study, or whathaveyou!

Upcoming Events

Hey guys!  Just a few new things to go on your calendar:

Wednesday, Feb. 3 - Video Interviews

Where: Weter Lounge

When: 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Who: All SPU students with State Work Study or State Need Grants!

Not all of us can go to Olympia, so we’re collecting video snippets of what people think to bring your voices to the capitol.

If you have a work study job, tell us how important it is to you. If you have work study employees, tell us how much you appreciate them.

Zachariah and I will be heading to Olympia on the 5th to present these testimonies to legislature.

Luke Kneckt will be conducting the interviews in Weter Lounge. There will be hot cocoa and a friendly atmosphere for everyone!

Friday, Feb. 5 - Olympia preview day.

Root for Cyan and Zachariah as they head the big C to talk with legislators in preparation for the 15th!

Monday, Feb. 8 - SPU Demonstration day.

We will be putting on a visual demonstration on campus to help spread awareness about Work Study budget cuts. The demonstration will consist of hanging 400 t-shirts with flyers describing various work study positions all over campus. In addition with will have a table set up outside of Gwinn and will be handing out information on campus all day.

You can help us! We need volunteers (to make up flyers, hand them out, collect t-shirts, etc) and t-shirt donations!

If you are interested in helping out please contact Natalie Witte at n.e.witte@gmail.com or (360) 393-8602. We’ll get you involved!

Current shirt count 16/400.

Monday, Feb. 15 – Bus to Olympia!!!!

THERE ARE NO CLASSES THIS DAY (it is a holiday, but the legislators do not take holidays during session).

Pack your voices & bring your opinions cause we’re going to Olympia!

We’re making breakfast for you in Weter Lounge on SPU’s campus, then it’s off to the capitol to save our financial aid. We’ll be teaming with the Washington Student Association to rally for our financial aid. so…

If you’re from a public college/university, ask your student government if the WSA has provided a bus.

If not… or

If you’re from a private university… or

If you just plain want to support the students in your community…

HOP ON OURS!

Legislature can’t ignore what’s knocking on their doorstep.

Oh yeah, AND IT’S FREE!

There will be more specific information to come on this event. Keep your eye out for updates and feel free to contact us with any questions you may have!
